"What most interests me about painting is gesture and gravity. I keep working until the parts stop moving and I find peace. For me, painting is a performance."
Edy Ferguson, September 2022 How can an artwork come to life and occupy the space of reality? This question surrounds the core of Edy Ferguson's artistic practice. Edy Ferguson (Studio 5-232) is a close observer of the everyday and notices how the advertising landscape, which bears filtered traces of popular culture and by which we are constantly surrounded, becomes a barometer of the sensibility of our culture. This implies the knowledge that economic factors are important in the creation of culture, however, when economics takes over, reality becomes bleak and contemporary art will find a way to address this.
Edy came of age artistically in the streets of New York. Her influences include the Fluxus movement, the New York Picture Generation, 1950's abstract expressionism and the vibrant scene of the East Village in the late 1980's, embodied by Basquiat.
